Mitzi the First Bionic German Shepherd

A German Shepherd called Mitzi has become the first dog in the world to be fitted with a pioneering prosthetic ankle.

The three-year-old had her rear right foot amputated after she was trampled by a horse.
But the lively dog is back to enjoying walks with her owner after being fitted with an artificial foot and ankle by pioneering vet Dr Noel Fitzpatrick.

The prosthesis is the first in the world to have been inserted into a fully moving bone and allows Mitzi to walk with a normal gait and no limp.

We at GSD Rescue in Surrey have worked closely for many years with a number of animal welfare groups in Ireland who are constantly under pressure to rescue so many German Shepherds in urgent
need of new homes. There is a serious problem in Ireland with a constant over population of dogs , mainly due to over breeding & owners not neutering their pets, coupled with a small national population of 4 million people means that the number of suitable, caring, family homes for German Shepherds in Ireland is very low.

Lungworm

The life-threatening lungworm A. vasorum is carried by slugs and snails.

If your dog comes into contact with these common garden pests thereis a risk it could become infected.

Dogs of all ages and breeds can become infected with lungworm. However, younger dogs seem to be more prone to picking up the parasite. Dogs known to eat slugs and snails should also be considered high risk.

The lungworm Angiostrongylus vasorum (also known as French Heartworm) is a parasite that infects dogs. The adult of this particular lungworm lives in the heart and major blood vessels supplying the lungs, where it can cause a host of problems. Left untreated, the infection can often be fatal.
